your need

The packaging of a product is a hot spot, where product and brand-communication intersect. In fact, it is an ideal subject, where a brand and its inherit values may speak directly through a physical representative.
Surprisingly often underrated (given that the package is often the first contact of the customer with the product), the thorough development of the packaging is a key component to a complete fusion of product and brand.

our solution

We are capable of the quick and careful elaboration of surprisingly innovative packaging concepts to represent core values of the client's products and brand.
Our practice of interwoven disciplines enables us to handle the whole process from general concept to technical development, the integration of graphics and final production.

challenge

Supplementing the line of innovative bike and ski helmets developed by us, a matching collection of fashionable sunglasses had to be created.
The intended product introduction schedule, that was ambitiously alined with the imminent annual trade show, promised to be a great challenge to our design team.

approach

Due to the heavily packed development cycle we decided to integrate the concept phase right into the CAID workflow resulting in a streamlined „pure-digital“ process. Within the first week we were able to review finished 3D models with the client. At the end of the second week we managed to hand over the final production assets to the asian manufacturer, thanks to a seamless meshing of the required ideation, visualization and modeling services.

result

Only 3 months after the project kick-off and right in time for the trade show the client received the first batch of production samples. A few months later the collection of sunglasses made its successful market launch.

challenge

We have been asked to design a family of spotlights starting from the company‘s previously developed LED module.
The goal of the project was to come up with a robust, durable and all-purpose product suited for a wide range of industrial and exterior environments.

approach

We came up with various concepts distinguished by different shapes and construction solutions in order to respect all requirements regarding the production process as well as the product itself such as outdoor resistance, durability and easy maintenability.
The result of the challenging ideation phase was a product-family based on a modular technical LED package that fits a total of 18 different spotlights according to the required dimension and efficiency.
We carried out the design implementation in the CAID workflow and kept the technical package provided by the client in sync with our design during various revision-cycles.
In order to fulfill the product development process the product line was completed by a series of accessories such as protection and fastening elements.

result

Thanks to its distinctive design, its easy maintainability and its suitability without compromises in rough environments, the SMART [4] spotlights family receives an extremely positive feedback from both professional planners and industry reviews.

challenge

The client, a company specialized in developing and manufacturing safety glasses and optical systems for the commercial and medical sector, tasked us to redesign their line of binocular precision loupes.
The main goal of the fundamental revision was to optimize the structural design to gain a lighter and more compact body, all by emphasizing the clients aspirations in quality and craftsmanship.

approach

To accommodate a variety of challenging requirements such as weight, precision and assembly process we kicked off with numerous mechanical concepts to explore the innovative potential of the product.
The insights gained during this technical pre-engineering-phase fused with the concepts of the styling and ideation phase. We developed three distinct design approaches each highlighting the desired product characteristics by different styling, materials and finishes. To illustrate our vision for the future product line and to prove the flexibility of the proposed style vocabulary we presented photorealistic renderings introducing the design to a larger range of products.
During the implementation phase we detailed the various product variants ensuring rigorous manufacturing tolerances and specifications. To speed up the production roll out we provided 2D and 3D CAD data to suppliers and helped coordinating design modifications to meet the different manufacturing capabilities.

result

Comprehending 18 products the Prismatic XS Line excels at weight to volume ratio compared to its predecessor by still using the same optical components wich leads to a favorable reception from new and existing customers. Thanks to our innovative structural design the assembly process could be significantly improved leading to a more precise and faster calibrating procedure.

challenge

The client, a start-up company, challenged us with his forward-looking and ambitious vision about reinventing an unloved but necessary accessory: the bike helmet.
Complying with the european and international standards but distinguished by a captivating esthetic and a seasonally adaptable appearance.
We were entrusted with an exceptional degree of freedom, in terms of project planning and development, together with the responsability to guide the entire project from the idea to the production.

approach

First step was to acquire enough knowledge and know how in order to realease the innovative potential from the standard's requirements.
A detailed market analisys allowed us to evaluate the technical state-of-art and the innovative capacity of possible competitors.
During the ideation phase we came up with different concepts defined by different innovation levels.
The elected concept gave birth to a unique modular structure together with a totally new elastic absorption system.
An unrivaled comfort and a modular system that covers a wide spectrum of esthetical and functional combinations (Summer/Winter or rather Bike/Ski/Skate) allows the user to create his/her own personal combination of components.
A constant support in terms of technology and production sourcing was given to the client throughtout the development process as well as an intensive employ of functional prototypes allowed the numerous developed components to mature into patents.
Through our vertically integrated business activities we were able to fulfil the complete implementation CAE process, supported by rapid prototyping techniques and thereby rapid interation cycles for the product optimization, against the diverse test standards.
The accurate specification of all components and the face-to-face coordination with the asian production partner ensured strict compliance with the client's quality requirements.
In parallel with the production set-up we provided a consiting number of product visualizations and numerous functional prototypes to support the company's mission.

challenge

The client, a start-up with engineering competence in power engine construction, commissioned us with the product design of a charcoal barbecue based on an optimised operating principle.
The aim was to conceive constructive solutions which would implement the client's unique technical invention in the best possible way, and to embed them within a product language which corresponds to the high standards of the premium private-client segment and of the professional and semi-professional cuisine.

approach

In extensive collaboration with the client succeeding an intense design phase, a charcoal barbecue was developed, the technical features of which are emphasized through an open and modular construction. During the integrative design and development process we were able to iteratively incorporate additional features and usage scenarios into the finished product.

This required a vivid exchange between the engineering and the design team by means of expressive sketches, technical illustrations, renderings, and the development of numerous functional mockups. During the initial phases of the product development we were already delivering photo-realistic rendering assets for the preparation of the product marketing.

In the course of the production-sourcing for the upcomming production run, we where committed to supply CAD data and component illustrations in support of a straightforward bidding procedure. In addition of the development - over the period of the production preparation with the producer - we assisted the client through several refinement stages and design reviews.

result

The Vulkan Grill captivates through its extraordinary design, which deliberately makes it stand out from the rest of its competitors. Pragmatism in construction and composition appeal both to experienced hobbyists and to professional users.

Due to a sophisticated and extraordinarily demanding construction and the synthesis of various materials and finishes such as polished stainless steel, brass and copper, a product came to light, which is extremely charismatic and appealing through its abundant technical details.

challenge

The client, producer of industrial refrigerators and operative on the Russian homeland market, envisaged to successfully increase the company's competitiveness on the european market. The assignment therefore involved the redesign and monitoring of the development of the portfolio consisting of 19 products.

approach

At first we developed a series of concepts, which on one hand emphasized an incisive appearance of the products and on the other pursued the creation of a homogenous perception of a heterogenous product family.

Subsequently, we developed the "new-edge" design line until the prototype phase in close collaboration with the engineering and production department of the producer by means of 3 key-products. We elaborated the final 3D-geometries which were directly processed in the CAE-process of manufacturing and determined further design-features for the remaining products.

result

The new product line could be implemented as initial batch within 7 months after the project launch and went in production after 3 more months.
The elaborated definition of the new product language allows the client to process the revision of further product types by the in-house engineering team.

challenge

We were commissioned to develop the client's idea of a new modular system of detergents into a family of products.
The briefing included the creation of physical mockups and photorealistic visualisations of the products to allow ergonomy- and consumer-acceptance-tests from the very beginning of the development phase. Further on the creation of final 3D geometry within a tight timeframe was mandatory.

approach

During the concept-stage we developed 3 different lines of products, each of whom featured a distinctive formal appearance yet still communicated the innovative product-character. The main focus was set on the ergonomically satisfying handling of the bottles, that span a wide range of sizes and weights (from 150ml to 2000ml) and the creation of a stilistically harmonious ensemble.
This was achieved by a continuous iteration of production of digital 3D-models and their physical representations realized as quick paper-models. The digital models served at the same time for the visualisation of the product-family through concept renderings.
Thanks to the digital workflow we have been able to present ergonomically approved concepts of all bottles only ten days after project launch.
After the client's approval of the favorite concept we defined the design of each bottle by class-a surface-modeling to comply with the quality criteria of the production and produced final physical mockups that corresponded precisely to final weight and volume. With the adaption to technical elements such as taps and screw threads we eventually delivered final production data.

result

In less than 6 weeks we developed a family of production-ready products.
This was achieved by the consequent use of digital workflow, well defined interfaces with production-suppliers, and finally the in-house handling of design-development, visualisation and prototyping.

challenge

Being both producer and distributor in the personal care sector, the client is one of the top players on the italian market. For the development of a new and innovative hair accessories brand we were assigned the conception and elaboration of various products that had to stand out by their original functionality and novel approach.

approach

In the first analysis phase we studied the relevant market segment worldwide, determined habits and expectations of the end-users consulting consumer surveys and summarized all results into a design briefing.

During the design phase we developed various product concepts which were characterized by innovation in construction and handling.
Basis of any concept was the patentability of the respective functionality.

Throughout the development phase we selected 3 products of the concept phase and got them ready to be prototyped by way of intensive prototyping/test iterations. The client was therefore enabled to transfer the products together with the production partner into series production.

result

The brand was introduced successfully into the market, also thanks to our innovative products which were promoted strongly on TV and print media, and allowed the client to remain competitive in this market-segment.

challenge

The client, specialized in industrial control panels, assigned us the task of revising one of its standard-products on a conceptional and creative basis in order to investigate the possibilities for radical innovation of this very technical product.
While the product's construction system, which allows a customized adaptation of the measurement to the electronic system inside the box, had to remain unaltered, a versatile and flexible use of the product in many different scenarios had to be explored.

approach

With the concept 'Polypanel' Sintesi Labs developed a product that systematically extends the adaptability of the control panel by means of a modular system. With the basis structure remaining unaltered, we added numerous modules for functional and aestetical customization of the panel.
Using an accompanying "virtual configurator" software interface, that we developed for the concept presentation during the client's annual in-house exhibition the user can execute by himself the product customization on screen.

result

The product concept succeeded during the client's "Design and Innovation"-Initiative and demonstrates the innovation-driven commitment of the company.

challenge

In order to implement his innovative material "Arboform", which is produced with 100% sustainable materials and which is processable by an injection molding procedure, the manufacturer was searching for a new product, which would do justice to the specific technical qualities of the material, as well as it needed to be convincing in it's context.
For this development a competition was held, which we succeeded to win with our game-concept "TopsyTurvy".

approach

TopsyTurvy is a stacking game for children and adults, which can be played either on your own or by a group of people. The players have to stack the individual elements (Topsies) until the tower collapses. The particular shape of the elements allows a wide variety of stacking and linking.
Based on our original idea and after designing various prototypes we managed to finalize the ideal Topsie-element.
By using a digital model we were able to determine the exact geometry and to approximate the ideal shape, until we found the best possible balance between a motor skill challenge and the fun factor of the game.
During the final stage we produced surface data, which could be transferred directly into the manufacturer's production system.

result

TopsyTurvy excites young and old players equally through a well-planned game concept and its particular and environment friendly material.

The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) needed a universally applicable web platform which enabled a smooth collaboration between professors and students.
We were commissioned to execute the entire project of concept, layout, development and implementation.

approach

The concept of the web application is to offer a platform, which allows separate closed user groups to easily post statements and updates on their project-progress and to archive the conversation and media for later project documentation.
The layout of the application is based on the maxim of intuitive usability. We combined suitable functionality from e-mail usage (marking unread entries) and popular chat-room concepts (speech bubbles) with a distinctive graphical appearance.
For the technical implementation we used our own cms-tool "fastframework". Besides a speedy implementation (the technical execution was finished after only 14 days including usage-tests) the programming of a taylor made back-end allows all users the hassle-free usage of the application.
Thanks to a programmatical separation of functionality, content and layout, single installations of the application are easily customizable based on specific needs.

result

The tool is being actively and sucessfully implemented by several project groups inside the university.

challenge

Since 2004, Sintesi Labs is developing the web-application flexfoto.
The driving vision behind the development is the realisation of a modern user-interface as well as the contemporary functionality of a web-based foto-management and presentation software.
In the internet-publishing sector, photographers mostly rely on big web portals which "manage" thousands of photographers and a correspondingly high number of pictures under one unified interface and which thereby deprives the single profile of any possibility of an individual unique position. On the other hand, corresponding individual solutions suffer from a graphic surface which is unacceptable for users, from an out-dated operating concept and/or a non-existing community-functionality.

approach

Flexfoto complements the photographer‘s toolbox, adding a high-quality tool for the web-based management of showcases for the communication with clients or for the organisation in teams. In doing so, Flexfoto renounces reproducing functionalities of offline-applications, and instead focuses on features which are relevant solely for the online usage. These are nonetheless implemented through the usual professional operating system.

Flexfoto‘s development takes place in iterative cycles comprising concept, implementation and review through professional photographers. This feedback regarding functionality and operation is decisive for all refinement until the release of each new version. In addition, it defines the requirements for the next development cycle.

result

Flexfoto is welcomed by a steadily growing user base as a quick web-publishing tool tailored to professionals‘ wishes. In the future, Sintesi Labs will keep on developing the application based on the needs of the users.
The product can be found on www.flexfoto.org

challenge

The department for art education of the national art gallery “Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden“ asked us to design a tool for children that should act as an “exhibition companion“ and serve as a container for carrying painting and drawing utensils.

approach

In collaboration with the client we defined the use case for the companion and the creative accessories to include.
Based on these requirements we came up with the idea for an easy to handle trolley equipped with pencils, paper, chalk and a chalk board. The Trolley can be used as a stool and its lid once lifted from the box converts to a drawing surface.
The implementation of the product under the terms of a small batch series was carried out in collaboration with local woodworking and metal processing companies.

result

The Kinder-Kunsttransporter proves to be popular by serving individual children as well as small groups as a guide and stimulating companion to make their exhibition experience instructive and creativity-promoting.
Delighted by the playfull product the art museum "MUMOK" in Vienna reissued an edition of 15 trolleys in 2012 for their art education program.

challenge

The client's intention was to develop a mobile computer which would be able to create an up to that point totally new device class. On the basis of the Handheld PC technology it should possess unique features such as extraordinary robustness, resistance to splash water as well as easy handling with the stylus and keyboard. It should become a reliable digital assistant for a broad lifestyle-oriented consumer segment. The development of the product should be on the one hand a demonstration of the company's innovative spirit and on the other the first step towards a product range of mobile lifestyle-devices.

We were assigned with the development of the design.

approach

For the elaboration of the design concept and construction we were free to be geared to the innovative product concept. In close collaboration with the client's engineering department we created fundamental product features such as the screen turning mechanism and the novel case concept made of PUR foam which guarantees shock resistance and watertightness.

The client's marketing strategy envisaged to promote the product to potential distribution partners already at an early development stage. The rapid development of electronic components required several modifications during the course of the project, thus also the development of the design was completely carried out in digital workflow and in close collaboration with the client's technical department. Hereby it was possible already during the detailing phases to both create product renderings and react flexibly to modifications. In addition to the development also the prototyping was started at an early stage which helped to test and experience the handling of the product right from the beginning.

result

The ultimate result was a product with a trend-setting concept which aims at making consumer electronics omnipresent and user-friendly. The product was employed successfully during company presentations in order to emphasize the client's long-term and innovation-oriented product strategy.
