Biotopia Eat

The annual "Biotopia Festival" a weekend-long outreach event with around 3.000 visitors, organised by the Bavarian State Museum of Life-Science was to be developed in terms of exhibition design.

The project includes the development of a main concept matching with the festival's theme "Eat", as well as the implementation and production of the wayfinding system for the approx. 1,000m² area, information boards, exhibitor signage for the approx. 100 participants, and other specific exhibition elements.

Concept

All visual elements that convey information or serve orientation follow the basic concept of "frames and flags", which takes into account the need for a lightweight and mobile system for the temporary event. Within this modular setting, we played out the multiple design possibilities.

The central display, prominently positioned in the entrance area of the event, serves as an ‘index’ of all the thematic areas and exhibits.
In reference to the ‘Eat’ theme, we have designed it as an oversized dining table.

Display elements

Thanks to the various mounting options for the flags, there are numerous possible configurations for the information displays.

Wayfinding

To help visitors quickly find their way around the outdoor area of the venue, we used large, distinctive structures; indoors and near the exhibits, we opted for smaller ones, including the lightweight “leaning” elements that mark each of the approximately 80 exhibitor zones.

Production

We carried out the final assembly of exhibits, display furniture, and wayfinding systems in storage rooms located right next to the event venue. In addition to streamlining the logistics of setup and takedown, this “pop-up workshop” also offered the advantage of allowing for last-minute adjustments and changes to the materials for the participating exhibitors.

Festival

More than 3,500 people attended the EAT Festival to explore, experience and discuss food. Visitors learned about nutrition, food, health and sustainability in a wide-ranging programme that included talks and debates on the latest research.
