challenge

The client, a start-up company, challenged us with his forward-looking and ambitious vision about reinventing an unloved but necessary accessory: the bike helmet.
Complying with the european and international standards but distinguished by a captivating esthetic and a seasonally adaptable appearance.
We were entrusted with an exceptional degree of freedom, in terms of project planning and development, together with the responsability to guide the entire project from the idea to the production.

approach

First step was to acquire enough knowledge and know how in order to realease the innovative potential from the standard's requirements.
A detailed market analisys allowed us to evaluate the technical state-of-art and the innovative capacity of possible competitors.
During the ideation phase we came up with different concepts defined by different innovation levels.
The elected concept gave birth to a unique modular structure together with a totally new elastic absorption system.
An unrivaled comfort and a modular system that covers a wide spectrum of esthetical and functional combinations (Summer/Winter or rather Bike/Ski/Skate) allows the user to create his/her own personal combination of components.
A constant support in terms of technology and production sourcing was given to the client throughtout the development process as well as an intensive employ of functional prototypes allowed the numerous developed components to mature into patents.
Through our vertically integrated business activities we were able to fulfil the complete implementation CAE process, supported by rapid prototyping techniques and thereby rapid interation cycles for the product optimization, against the diverse test standards.
The accurate specification of all components and the face-to-face coordination with the asian production partner ensured strict compliance with the client's quality requirements.
In parallel with the production set-up we provided a consiting number of product visualizations and numerous functional prototypes to support the company's mission.

result

The outcome of the fruitful collaboration with Rockwell Headgear is a highly innovative and award-winning protective helmet for various applications such as bike, ski and skate, on the market starting from spring 2015. Go to Rockwell Headgear to see the Product page.

challenge

The client, a start-up with engineering competence in power engine construction, commissioned us with the product design of a charcoal barbecue based on an optimised operating principle.
The aim was to conceive constructive solutions which would implement the client's unique technical invention in the best possible way, and to embed them within a product language which corresponds to the high standards of the premium private-client segment and of the professional and semi-professional cuisine.

approach

In extensive collaboration with the client succeeding an intense design phase, a charcoal barbecue was developed, the technical features of which are emphasized through an open and modular construction. During the integrative design and development process we were able to iteratively incorporate additional features and usage scenarios into the finished product.

This required a vivid exchange between the engineering and the design team by means of expressive sketches, technical illustrations, renderings, and the development of numerous functional mockups. During the initial phases of the product development we were already delivering photo-realistic rendering assets for the preparation of the product marketing.

In the course of the production-sourcing for the upcomming production run, we where committed to supply CAD data and component illustrations in support of a straightforward bidding procedure. In addition of the development - over the period of the production preparation with the producer - we assisted the client through several refinement stages and design reviews.

result

The Vulkan Grill captivates through its extraordinary design, which deliberately makes it stand out from the rest of its competitors. Pragmatism in construction and composition appeal both to experienced hobbyists and to professional users.

Due to a sophisticated and extraordinarily demanding construction and the synthesis of various materials and finishes such as polished stainless steel, brass and copper, a product came to light, which is extremely charismatic and appealing through its abundant technical details.

challenge

The client, producer of industrial refrigerators and operative on the Russian homeland market, envisaged to successfully increase the company's competitiveness on the european market. The assignment therefore involved the redesign and monitoring of the development of the portfolio consisting of 19 products.

approach

At first we developed a series of concepts, which on one hand emphasized an incisive appearance of the products and on the other pursued the creation of a homogenous perception of a heterogenous product family.

Subsequently, we developed the "new-edge" design line until the prototype phase in close collaboration with the engineering and production department of the producer by means of 3 key-products. We elaborated the final 3D-geometries which were directly processed in the CAE-process of manufacturing and determined further design-features for the remaining products.

result

The new product line could be implemented as initial batch within 7 months after the project launch and went in production after 3 more months.
The elaborated definition of the new product language allows the client to process the revision of further product types by the in-house engineering team.

challenge

We were commissioned to develop the client's idea of a new modular system of detergents into a family of products.
The briefing included the creation of physical mockups and photorealistic visualisations of the products to allow ergonomy- and consumer-acceptance-tests from the very beginning of the development phase. Further on the creation of final 3D geometry within a tight timeframe was mandatory.

approach

During the concept-stage we developed 3 different lines of products, each of whom featured a distinctive formal appearance yet still communicated the innovative product-character. The main focus was set on the ergonomically satisfying handling of the bottles, that span a wide range of sizes and weights (from 150ml to 2000ml) and the creation of a stilistically harmonious ensemble.
This was achieved by a continuous iteration of production of digital 3D-models and their physical representations realized as quick paper-models. The digital models served at the same time for the visualisation of the product-family through concept renderings.
Thanks to the digital workflow we have been able to present ergonomically approved concepts of all bottles only ten days after project launch.
After the client's approval of the favorite concept we defined the design of each bottle by class-a surface-modeling to comply with the quality criteria of the production and produced final physical mockups that corresponded precisely to final weight and volume. With the adaption to technical elements such as taps and screw threads we eventually delivered final production data.

result

In less than 6 weeks we developed a family of production-ready products.
This was achieved by the consequent use of digital workflow, well defined interfaces with production-suppliers, and finally the in-house handling of design-development, visualisation and prototyping.

challenge

The assignment consisted in the development of design concepts for the successful positioning of the client's espresso-dispenser, already available on the asian market, on the european market.

approach

The technical development of the device was already accomplished and the composition of the assembly group practically unalterable.
Aware of the requirements for the market positioning we developed various formal approaches. Thus we brought together design and technical package at an early stage and were therefore able to respect the project's tight time frame also due to the fact that further evaluation and adaptation iterations dropped out.

result

By means of the resulting product renderings the client was able to push the introduction on the market by conducting further consumer studies as well as by communicating directly with the customer.

challenge

Being both producer and distributor in the personal care sector, the client is one of the top players on the italian market. For the development of a new and innovative hair accessories brand we were assigned the conception and elaboration of various products that had to stand out by their original functionality and novel approach.

approach

In the first analysis phase we studied the relevant market segment worldwide, determined habits and expectations of the end-users consulting consumer surveys and summarized all results into a design briefing.

During the design phase we developed various product concepts which were characterized by innovation in construction and handling.
Basis of any concept was the patentability of the respective functionality.

Throughout the development phase we selected 3 products of the concept phase and got them ready to be prototyped by way of intensive prototyping/test iterations. The client was therefore enabled to transfer the products together with the production partner into series production.

result

The brand was introduced successfully into the market, also thanks to our innovative products which were promoted strongly on TV and print media, and allowed the client to remain competitive in this market-segment.

challenge

The client, specialized in industrial control panels, assigned us the task of revising one of its standard-products on a conceptional and creative basis in order to investigate the possibilities for radical innovation of this very technical product.
While the product's construction system, which allows a customized adaptation of the measurement to the electronic system inside the box, had to remain unaltered, a versatile and flexible use of the product in many different scenarios had to be explored.

approach

With the concept 'Polypanel' Sintesi Labs developed a product that systematically extends the adaptability of the control panel by means of a modular system. With the basis structure remaining unaltered, we added numerous modules for functional and aestetical customization of the panel.
Using an accompanying "virtual configurator" software interface, that we developed for the concept presentation during the client's annual in-house exhibition the user can execute by himself the product customization on screen.

result

The product concept succeeded during the client's "Design and Innovation"-Initiative and demonstrates the innovation-driven commitment of the company.

challenge

Over a planned period of 15 years, the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) in close collaboration with Goethe-Institutes worldwide presents "new olds. Design between Tradition and Innovation", a travelling exhibit available in numerous venues, that brings together "ideas on contemporary theory and design practice in a variety of nations and cultures".

The aim was to take account of the exhibition's long duration and rich amount of temporarily shown exhibits through a yet to be developed online-concept and a correspondingly functioning online-platform as "digital counterpart" to the exhibition.

We were entrusted with its conceptual and graphical development, as well as with its technical implementation.

approach

Taking into account the unusual long running period of 15 years, we have successfully addressed both from a conceptual and creative point of view with an advanced community-platform-format.
Furthermore, considering right from the beginning of the project how little the system would measure itself against common formats, we deliberately breached the usual web-layout standards.
We were looking for nothing less than an innovative and yet timeless presentation format of the numerous exhibits, in plain words a digital "companion" with the power of bringing visitors as well as the exhibition's designers together.

With a visually confident appearance and the playfull fully-animated exhibit-show, recalling the "course of time", the implementation ventures out from a technical point of view to challenging regions of actual feasibility and computing power.

The platform offers numerous interaction moments for both visitors and exhibition's designers, as for instance the writing and commenting of statements, blog-authorship, and the possibility of "liking" and "following".

result

The platform can be visited at http://newoldsblog.ifa.de as a lively meeting point of the current design discourse until expectedly 2026.

Sintesi Labs designs, develops, produces and markets the product family of "minimimobili".
minimimobili bridges the gap between temporary and permanent furnishings by providing minimalistic furniture elements for modern urban nomads.

approach

The common foundation behind all products of the minimimobili-family is corrugated board, which stands out through its unusual stability thanks to our unique zig-zag folding structure.
Every individual piece of minimimobili is constructed digitally in 3D during numerous iterations. It is then transformed into blueprints and ultimately perfected on the finalized prototype with the original material.

result

minimimobili is popular for frequent home movers, students with a limited budget, but equally appreciated by enthusiasts of minimalism and environmentally friendly supporters.

The website was supposed to outline the provided services and feature numerous example projects in a homogeneous way jet differentiating the two buisness branches.
We where asked to overhaul the company logo and design, develop and implement the new website.

approach

We designed a visual concept which characterized both branches by different color schemes. We developed a "project browser" to showcase the example projects incorporating project-timelines, geographical localisation and related services to further enrich the representation.

The categorical separation of content and function inhering in our in-house CMS-platform "fastframework" enabled our client to integrate his voluminous existing dataset into the system from the very beginning of the development process and thus helped to substantially speed up the implementation process.

challenge

We were asked to design and develop a new website for an engineering & construction services company which was supposed to emphasise the strategic orientation on architectural services supported by a selection of suitable project examples.
The website was also supposed to serve as an easy to handle data exchange platform for project partners and clients.
We were in charge of the full development process, from conception to implementation.

approach

The visual and functional center of our concept is the portfolio-browser. It shows a complete project overview as well as a detailed description of each project, which could be easily filtered by specific categories.
From a usability point of view particular focus was given on the conception and development of the data exchange platform, required to be used by clients and partners without any learn effort.
Thanks to our in-house developed "fastframework" web platform we were able create a very intuitive website both for the visitor and the content-manager in a short period of time.

In order to implement his innovative material "Arboform", which is produced with 100% sustainable materials and which is processable by an injection molding procedure, the manufacturer was searching for a new product, which would do justice to the specific technical qualities of the material, as well as it needed to be convincing in it's context.
For this development a competition was held, which we succeeded to win with our game-concept "TopsyTurvy".

approach

TopsyTurvy is a stacking game for children and adults, which can be played either on your own or by a group of people. The players have to stack the individual elements (Topsies) until the tower collapses. The particular shape of the elements allows a wide variety of stacking and linking.
Based on our original idea and after designing various prototypes we managed to finalize the ideal Topsie-element.
By using a digital model we were able to determine the exact geometry and to approximate the ideal shape, until we found the best possible balance between a motor skill challenge and the fun factor of the game.
During the final stage we produced surface data, which could be transferred directly into the manufacturer's production system.

result

TopsyTurvy excites young and old players equally through a well-planned game concept and its particular and environment friendly material.

The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) needed a universally applicable web platform which enabled a smooth collaboration between professors and students.
We were commissioned to execute the entire project of concept, layout, development and implementation.

approach

The concept of the web application is to offer a platform, which allows separate closed user groups to easily post statements and updates on their project-progress and to archive the conversation and media for later project documentation.
The layout of the application is based on the maxim of intuitive usability. We combined suitable functionality from e-mail usage (marking unread entries) and popular chat-room concepts (speech bubbles) with a distinctive graphical appearance.
For the technical implementation we used our own cms-tool "fastframework". Besides a speedy implementation (the technical execution was finished after only 14 days including usage-tests) the programming of a taylor made back-end allows all users the hassle-free usage of the application.
Thanks to a programmatical separation of functionality, content and layout, single installations of the application are easily customizable based on specific needs.

The client needed an online-platform for the presentation and sale of high-quality vintage furniture. It should be possible for the employees to manage about 50-100 new products per month directly through the website.
The aim was to complement the former ebay shop through an own website.

approach

The layout and concept development took place in parallel, in this way we were able to actively involve the client in the central topic of the development, the elaboration of a reliable stock-administration, at an early stage. In doing so, we relied on our proprietary software "fastframework", a web application which enables the creation of entirely customer-adapted CMS-systems and which thereby excludes to the greatest possible extent operational errors by means of intuitive operation.

result

The client was able to significantly increase his online distribution activities, the website turnover towers above the ebay shop turnover by far.
The web-based interface allows new employees a safe management after a short training period.
Thanks to the system‘s inherent extensibility, since the first launch new features are being added in regular stages, like search engine optimisation, automatic newsletter distribution, send-to-friend function and facebook integration.

result

challenge

Since 2004, Sintesi Labs is developing the web-application flexfoto.
The driving vision behind the development is the realisation of a modern user-interface as well as the contemporary functionality of a web-based foto-management and presentation software.
In the internet-publishing sector, photographers mostly rely on big web portals which "manage" thousands of photographers and a correspondingly high number of pictures under one unified interface and which thereby deprives the single profile of any possibility of an individual unique position. On the other hand, corresponding individual solutions suffer from a graphic surface which is unacceptable for users, from an out-dated operating concept and/or a non-existing community-functionality.

approach

Flexfoto complements the photographer‘s toolbox, adding a high-quality tool for the web-based management of showcases for the communication with clients or for the organisation in teams. In doing so, Flexfoto renounces reproducing functionalities of offline-applications, and instead focuses on features which are relevant solely for the online usage. These are nonetheless implemented through the usual professional operating system.

Flexfoto‘s development takes place in iterative cycles comprising concept, implementation and review through professional photographers. This feedback regarding functionality and operation is decisive for all refinement until the release of each new version. In addition, it defines the requirements for the next development cycle.

result

Flexfoto is welcomed by a steadily growing user base as a quick web-publishing tool tailored to professionals‘ wishes. In the future, Sintesi Labs will keep on developing the application based on the needs of the users.

challenge

The purpose of the project was to present the ambitious building project "Parco Certosa" located in the heart of Milano and promote the commercialisation of its residential units.
To do so we were asked to design and develop a website and the basic elements of its corporate identity.

approach

The layout of the website corresponds to the sophisticated character of the venture by using a reduced and minimal graphical structure. The web-application shines with a custom drawn map tool which invites the visitor to explore the project through multiple perspectives and zoom levels from the urban context to detailed plans of every single residential flat.
By using our own custom cms "fastframework" serving as technical back-end for the website we enabled the client's various business divisions (management, marketing, sales) to create and revise the content of the site during the ongoing construction progress.

Based on these requirements we came up with the idea for an easy to handle trolley equipped with pencils, paper, chalk and a chalk board. The Trolley can be used as a stool and its lid once lifted from the box converts to a drawing surface.
The implementation of the product under the terms of a small batch series was carried out in collaboration with local woodworking and metal processing companies.

result

The Kinder-Kunsttransporter proves to be popular by serving individual children as well as small groups as a guide and stimulating companion to make their exhibition experience instructive and creativity-promoting.
Delighted by the playfull product the art museum "MUMOK" in Vienna reissued an edition of 15 trolleys in 2012 for their art education program.

challenge

result

challenge

Sintesi Labs was entrusted with the development of the graphic concept for the spring/summer 2007 women and men Mo-one collection.

approach

We pinned down the main guidelines, direction and framework, that would characterize each product of the collection in order to create a homogeneous graphic image.

Afterwards, an intensive collaboration with the Mo-one style department ensured a perfect alignement of the products with the graphic concept.

To provide the brand's manufacturing partner with a valid support to the production we delivered guidelines and technical specification sheets.

result

The final collection embraced more than 35 pieces, all of them, thanks to the homogeneous graphic image, perceived as part of a whole family.

The client, a professional style consultant, asked us to design and develop her corporate image and in particular her website.

approach

Being a small business owner, the client found a matching offer in our "Start-up bundle".
At first in consultation with the client, we defined the required communication materials.
Expanding from the essential material like business cards, stationery and promotion flyers to the design and development of the website which was supposed to be the main customer acquiring tool, managed and updated directly by the client herself. Thanks to the well defined tasks we could swiftly accomplish the assignment.
The client received an expressive corporate design which embraced the essential material as well as the website.

challenge

The fashion label Alessandro dall‘Acqua needed a relaunch of its website. For this purpose, a completely new graphic concept had to be developed and implemented.
We were commissioned with the whole project, aiming for an implementation target of two month for the first expansion stage.

approach

The main focus of the label’s presentation is to showcase the varying collections. For the "World of ADA" we developed a distinct presentation module which enabled the visitor to browse through each collection in various steps – by using touchpad, mouse or keyboard.
Thanks to the underlying technology, the highly frequented website can be accessed with no layout restrictions also from mobile devices.
The use of our proprietary cms-platform product "fastframework" allows employees of the label to handle the website‘s contents to their full extent, to add new collections and to take care of the graphical fine-tuning.

challenge

The fashion label DIMITRI needed a new website which was expected to correspond to the label‘s minimalist brand appearance and yet reflect finesse.
Apart from presenting the biannual changing collections in picture and video format and providing a blogging platform the website had to incorporate the existing online-shop in a seamless way.

approach

In the course of several draft-iterations, together with the client we developed the minimalist final layout, which includes a "cover-flow" themed central graphic element, inviting the visitor to browse through the collections.
The system‘s back-end, which is based on our own custom cms-platform "fastframework", allows the client to autonomously manage the contents of the website.

challenge

The client, a multidisciplinary design studio, was looking for a new website designed to reflect the innovative potential of the studio and to highlight its detailed content.

approach

Being a small business owner, the client found a matching offer in our "Start-up bundle". Therefore we could rapidly deliver a turnkey solution.
The designed graphic concept, enriched by various animations, translucent elements and shadow effects conferred a clean yet immersive look to the website.
A clear navigation system based on a "cards"-metaphore allows the visitor to get a complete look over the offered services and products, at the same time a "doormat menu" helps keeping track of the location while navigating within the website.
By using our own custom cms "fastframework" serving as technical back-end for the website we enabled the client to create and revise the content of the site in a very intuitive way.

challenge

result

challenge

The client's intention was to develop a mobile computer which would be able to create an up to that point totally new device class. On the basis of the Handheld PC technology it should possess unique features such as extraordinary robustness, resistance to splash water as well as easy handling with the stylus and keyboard. It should become a reliable digital assistant for a broad lifestyle-oriented consumer segment. The development of the product should be on the one hand a demonstration of the company's innovative spirit and on the other the first step towards a product range of mobile lifestyle-devices.

We were assigned with the development of the design.

approach

For the elaboration of the design concept and construction we were free to be geared to the innovative product concept. In close collaboration with the client's engineering department we created fundamental product features such as the screen turning mechanism and the novel case concept made of PUR foam which guarantees shock resistance and watertightness.

The client's marketing strategy envisaged to promote the product to potential distribution partners already at an early development stage. The rapid development of electronic components required several modifications during the course of the project, thus also the development of the design was completely carried out in digital workflow and in close collaboration with the client's technical department. Hereby it was possible already during the detailing phases to both create product renderings and react flexibly to modifications. In addition to the development also the prototyping was started at an early stage which helped to test and experience the handling of the product right from the beginning.

result

The ultimate result was a product with a trend-setting concept which aims at making consumer electronics omnipresent and user-friendly. The product was employed successfully during company presentations in order to emphasize the client's long-term and innovation-oriented product strategy.
